How to add an outline in Word

To outline text is to surround it with colors and effects. Ms. Word allows users to trace texts to produce an eye-catching and presentable document. In this article, we shall discuss common ways of outlining texts in Word.

Using the Text outline Effect

Here are the steps to follow:

1. To get started, locate the Word application on your Pc. Double-click on it to open the application. To create a new document, click the File button on the toolbar. Then, locate the New button.


2. Type the Word or phrase you want to outline on the document. Then, highlight the entered text.

3. Click the Home tab on the toolbar and locate the Font section.

4. Click the color effect and Typography drop-down button. To check the button’s names, hover the mouse over the font’s buttons.

5. Hover the Mouse over the outline button.


6. Select the outline color from the Theme Colors sections. If you need more colors, click on the More outline colors button.

7. To customize the weight of the outline, hover the mouse over the Weight button. Choose the type of outline weight that fits your text.

8. Lastly, to add dashes in your outline, hover the mouse over the Dashes
button. Choose the type of outline weight that fits your text.

Using the Word Art Tool

Another method of adding an outline to your text is using the Word Art tool. Here are the steps to follow in this method:

1. To get started, locate the Word application on your Pc. Double-click on it to open the application. To create a new document, click the File button on the toolbar. Then, locate the New button.

2. Click on the Insert tab.


3. Locate the Word Art drop-down button, and click on it.

4. Choose the word-art design you want.

NOTE: Not all designs have an outline; therefore, choose the one with the outline.

5. Replace the Sample design with your Word or phrase.

6. Click on the Word or phrase to enable the Format tab in the drawing tools section.

7. Locate the WordArt styles section and click the text outline drop-down button.

8. Select the outline color from the Theme Colors sections.

9. To customize the weight of the outline, hover the mouse over the Weight button.

10. To add dashes in your outline, hover the mouse over the Dashes
button


Using the Font dialogue box

Steps to follow:

1. To get started, locate the Word application on your Pc. Double-click on it to open the application.

2.
Select the Word or phrase you want to outline. Then, press CTRL + D on your keyboard to open the font dialogue box.

3. On the Font dialogue box, locate the text effect button and click on it.

4. Choose the Text outline button from the Format Text Effects dialogue box.

5. Customize the Text or phrase using the tools in this dialogue box.

6. Hit the Ok Button to close the Format Text Effects dialogue box and font dialogue box, respectively.
