How to add navigation in Word

Navigation is a tool in Ms. Word used to manage headings, pages, and word search engines. This tool makes the working of Word more accessible and enjoyable. However, Very few people know of this tool. This article will guide new users on how to activate and use the navigation tool.

Adding Navigation Tool

Using the View tab

Here are the steps to follow when activating the Navigation pane from the view tab:

1. To get started, locate the Word application on your Pc. Double-click on it to open the application. To create a new document, click the File button on the toolbar. Then, locate the New button.

You can also use the keyboard shortcuts to open a new document. That is, CTRL + N. Alternatively, open an existing document that you need to add to the navigation pane.

2. Locate the View tab on the toolbar section.

3. In the Show group, check the Navigation checkbox.

4. By doing so, a navigation pane will open on the left side of the document.

Using the page section

You can also use the page section that indicates the page in your document to add the navigation page. Here are the steps to follow when using this method:

1. To get started, locate the Word application on your Pc. Double-click on it to open the application. To create a new document, click the File button on the toolbar. Then, locate the New button.

Using Keyboard shortcut

To Deactivate Navigation Tool

Steps to follow:

1. To get started, locate the Word application on your Pc. Double-click on it to open the application.

2. Locate the View tab on the toolbar section.

3. In the Show group, uncheck the Navigation checkbox.

Alternatively:

1. Locate the Navigation pane.

2. Click on the Cancel icon on its pane.

Or

3. Click on the drop-down button next to the Cancel icon.

4. Then, select the Close option.

Using the Navigation Tool

Here is how one can use the navigation pane:

1. The navigation pane is divided into three tabs (Headings, pages, and Results).

2. When you click the heading tab, you can see all the headings in your document. From this pane, you can Promote or demote the heading.

3. To manage your pages, click on the Pages tab.


4. Lastly, the results will appear in the Result section if you search for anything using the navigation search box.
